Math Applications in the Real
World I
Ages: 13 and up Length of class: 6 weeks Required Items: Simple calculator Time required: 3 – 4 hours per week; plus 1 hour weekly online class meeting Description: Students will gain the ability to apply basic mathematical applications to real life events. Topics covered include: calculation of simple and compound interest, importance of saving, checking accounts and check writing function, importance of investing and basic investment options. The goal of the class is to help students develop the ability to think critically and carefully about money matters and to be comfortable applying what they learn in class to the real world. Prerequisites: Students must have good understanding of fractions, unlike fractions, conversions, decimals and percentages. Although review is included, this class assumes student can work with these concepts. Math Applications in the Real World II Ages: 13 and up Length of class: 6 weeks Required Items: Simple calculator Time required: 3 – 4 hours per week; plus 1 hour weekly online class meeting Description: This is a continuation of Math Applications in the Real World I. Students will gain the ability to apply basic mathematical applications to personal finances. Topics covered include: importance of investing, stocks, bonds, checking and savings accounts, creating a budget, creating personal financial statements, credit cards and implications of bad credit. The goal of the class is to help students apply concepts to personal finances and to develop the ability to think critically and carefully about money matters. Prerequisites: Students must have successfully completed Math Applications in the Real World I. |
