Description: Students will gain the ability to develop purpose, consider audience, and write clear and coherent sentences and paragraphs that develop a central idea. This class will also help the students to become knowledgeable and comfortable with using their computer so that it may be used as a valuable tool in their education. Students willbelearning spelling rules, vocabulary skills, as well as use of reference materials, sentence structure and parts of speech, punctuation, capitalization, basic grammar, and complete, coherent, and interesting writing of a paragraph that has purpose and considers audience. Description: A continuation of Fundamentals of Writing 1. Enroll Descriptive Writing Ages: 10 and up Length of Class: 6 weeks Dates and times of Online Meetings: Mondays beginning June 7th 9 a.m. Pacific (11 a.m. Central, noon Eastern) Time required: Approximately 2 to 3 hours per lesson, plus 1-hour online class times as indicated. Description: Students will learn to write interesting and inviting paragraphs using different types of figurative language and literary devices.Using these methods, students will use words to paint a picture of images and events in the mind of their reader. Students will write a paragraph describing a moment in time in addition to other paragraphs that create clear pictures of images, people, and other places important to the writer. Working on focus and specific word use will be emphasized while students continue to work on vocabulary, parts of speech, and sentence structure. Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Writing 1 and 2 or the skills taught in those classes, and teacher recommendation. Enroll Beginning Creative Writing Ages: 10 and up Length of Class: 6 weeksDates and times of Online Meetings: Thursdays beginning June 17th 9 a.m. Pacific (11 a.m. Central, noon Eastern) Time required: Approximately 3-4 hours per week, plus 1 hour weekly online class time. Description: Students will learn the basics of creative writing, including the study of specific settings, plots, and characters. Emphasis is placed on descriptive writing, varied sentence structure, thesaurus use, and learning to self-edit. Prerequisites: Ability to type using Microsoft Word. Fundamentals of Writing 1 and 2 and Narrative Writing, and our instructor recommendation. Poetry Project Ages: 11-18 Length of class: 6 weeks Dates and times of Online Meetings: Mondays beginning June 7th 9 am Pacific (11 am Central, Time Required: Approximately two hours per lesson, plus one-hour online class times as indicated. Description: Are you a young, budding poet? Are you curious about the various kinds of poems and what poetry is? Or perhaps you need to learn some of the basics but are not ready for the upper-level Poetry class? If so, then Poetry Project is for you! This class will serve as an introductory overview unit of poetry and will teach some of the basic poetry forms. You also will read poems and write basic poetry. As you practice writing poems in these forms, you will be building your own booklet of poetry. By the end of the session, you will have created a poetry project portfolio. This class is appropriate for all ages and levels of expertise, as you will be required to include only the basics but can make your project as complex as you wish. Edits will be required as needed to help ensure poems are in the proper form. Since you will be compiling a portfolio for the poetry project, the final assignment will necessitate some layout (inclusion of pictures or clipart, formatting, etc.) as well. Prerequisites: Ability to type and to insert pictures using Microsoft Word and ability to follow assignment guidelines requiring specific formats for the various kinds of poems. (Students must be eligible for Narrative or a higher class to enroll in the summer Poetry Project.) Enroll BookProject Ages: 11-18 Length of class: 6 weeks Dates and times of Online Meetings: Wednesdays beginning June 16th 8 a.m. PST (10 a.m. CST, 11 a.m. EST) Time Required: Approximately two hours per lesson, plus one-hour online class times as indicated. Description: Do you love to read? Summer is the best time to choose a book and curl up and read it! Now you can learn how to create MORE than a book report by learning about the different elements of fiction: plot, character, setting, as well as how to write a book review and how to do an author biography. This class is appropriate for all ages and levels of expertise, as you will choose a book for your age level, and your project as complex as you wish. Enroll Paragraph Writing Ages: 13 and up Length of Class: 6 weeks Dates and times of Online Meetings: Wednesdays beginning June 2nd 8 a.m. Pacific (10 a.m. Central, 11 a.m. Eastern) Time required: Approximately 4 hours per lesson, plus 1-hour online class times as indicated. Description: Students will work on writing different styles of paragraphs and focus on sentence structure, and grammar, and development of the understanding of a topic sentence and details within the paragraph. Students will learn to write a descriptive paragraph, compare-contrast paragraph, characterization paragraph, narrative paragraph, process paragraph, and expository paragraph. This challenging class is highly suitable for all ages from 13 through high school. Prerequisites: Ability to type using Microsoft Word and good understanding AND application of grammar, complete sentences, and punctuation – especially proper comma usage (prerequisites include Fundamentals 1 and 2, Narrative, and Report Writing, and teacher recommendation, or submission of writing sample). Enroll Summer Subordinates (comma usage) Ages: 12 and up Length of Class: 6 weeks Dates and times of Online Meetings: Tuesdays beginning June 1st 9 a.m. Pacific (11 a.m. Central, noon Eastern) Time required: Approximately 2-3 hours per lesson, plus 1-hour online class times as indicated. Description: Are you struggling with comma usage? Are you hoping to move forward in the classes we offer, but punctuation and grammar are holding you back? Recognizing subordinate and independent clauses will solve your problems! In this class we will focus on each type of clause and how to punctuate. We will overcome that punctuation problem which holds up so many students from progressing to further classes. Prerequisites: Ability to type using Microsoft Word and basic understanding of writing sentences and expressing ideas. Completion of Fundamentals 1 and 2, Narrative Writing, and Report Writing (or writing sample) required. Enroll Creative Writing: Short Story Writing Ages: 14 and up Length of Class: 6 weeks Wednesdays beginning June 16th 9 a.m. Pacific (11 a.m. Central, noon Eastern) Time required: Approximately 4 hours per week, plus 1 hour weekly online class time. Although meetings are scheduled as shown, in order to accommodate a more relaxed summer schedule, students will have until July 24 to complete all work. Description: Students will learn to improve their creative writing through the study and use of varied sentence structure, thesaurus use, descriptive writing, point of view, setting, mood, audience, characterization, plot, foreshadowing, suspense, and editing. Prerequisites:Paragraph Writing or strong understanding of grammar, sentence structure, punctuation and paragraphing. Preference given to students who have also completed Writing About Books. Enroll Play Writing Ages: 14 and up Length of Class: 6 weeks Dates and times of Online Meetings: Wednesdays beginning June 16th 9 a.m. Pacific (11 a.m. Central, noon Eastern) Time required: Approximately 4 hours per week, plus 1 hour weekly online class time. Description: Students will learn to write short plays for stage production using dialogue, stage directions, characterization, plot structure, conflict, audience, setting, mood, humor and emotion, plot twists, and editing. Prerequisites: Paragraph Writing, Creative Writing- Short Story Writing, and our instructor recommendation. Enroll Expository Writing (Research Essay) Ages: 14 and up Length of Class: 6 weeks Dates and times of Online Meetings: Tuesdays beginning June 1st 8 a.m. Pacific (10 a.m. Central, 11 a.m. Eastern) Time required: Approximately 4 hours per lesson, plus 1-hour online class times as indicated. Description: Students will learn to write a research essay. Concepts covered and learned through writing one essay include: punctuation and paragraphing; choosing and narrowing a topic; choosing, documenting, and citing resources in parenthetical references; choosing 3 or more main points (subtopics); note taking; using and documenting quotes; writing a thesis statement; writing topic sentences; MLA Format; writing supporting paragraphs; transition sentences; writing an opening paragraph; and writing a closing paragraph. It is recommended that this class be repeated more than once, especially for high school level students. Prerequisites: Ability to type using Microsoft Word and strong understanding AND application of grammar, complete sentences, and punctuation. Paragraph Writing and Writing About Books (and teacher recommendation) required. Enroll Presentation Class Ages: 12 and up Length of Class: 6 weeks Dates and times of Online Meetings: Wednesdays beginning June 16th 9 a.m. Pacific (11 a.m. Central, noon Eastern) Time Required: Approximately 3 hours per week, plus 1-hour weekly online class time. Although meetings are scheduled as shown, in order to accommodate a more relaxed summer schedule, students will have until July 24 to complete all work. Description: Students will use the presentation software, Impress (which is the free equivalent of PowerPoint), to create a presentation slide show to display their understanding of the different patterns of development, mainly compare-contrast. They will apply skills that have been learned in both the Paragraph Writing and Elementary Report Writing classes. Prerequisites: Ability to type using Microsoft Word and strong understanding AND application of grammar, complete sentences, and punctuation. Completion of Paragraph Writing required (or teacher recommendation). Enroll Math Applications in the Real World I Ages: 13 and up Length of class: 6 weeks Required Items: Simple calculator Dates and times of Online Meetings: Mondays beginning June 14th 9 a.m. Pacific (11 a.m. Central, noon Eastern) Time required: 3 – 4 hours per week; plus 1 hour weekly online class meeting Description: Students will gain the ability to apply basic mathematical applications to real life events. Topics covered include: calculation of simple and compound interest, importance of saving, checking accounts and check writing function, importance of investing and basic investment options. The goal of the class is to help students develop the ability to think critically and carefully about money matters and to be comfortable applying what they learn in class to the real world. Prerequisites: Students must have good understanding of fractions, unlike fractions, conversions, decimals and percentages. Although review is included, this class assumes student can work with these concepts. Enroll |
