Service Description

Welcome to Camp Home2Teach! During each two-week mini-session, we will do a deep dive into an aspect of storytelling: setting, character, and plot. You are currently viewing Camp B: Intermediate/Advanced Character Intensive: Each day of camp, students will receive daily instruction and fun prompts to help them dive into aspects of building characters, with a particular focus on how to reveal your character through thoughts, words, and actions. Students will utilize mentor texts and cycles of peer review to build a character for their own short story (which can be completed in our other camps). Particular focus will be placed on how indirect characterization relies on aspects of setting and plot. Weekly class chats are designed to provide a space for live brainstorming and sharing. Weekly discussion board posts will encourage peer feedback skills; all discussion board posts are carefully monitored by the camp instructor. Daily activities are designed to encourage students to hone new skills in a fun and flexible way. Extension activities will be provided each day for students interested in a deeper dive into the day's concepts. Our summer camps are drop-in style. Campers do not need to complete assignments in sequential order; instead, they jump in on the day they are able to join us (i.e. if they miss Tuesday, they don't need to make up those assignments and instead can move into Wednesday's activities). Daily assignments close at the conclusion of each day, though students are able to access the prompts throughout the camp session. Students earn badges for each day that they complete in camp. Because of the focus on working with peers, summer camps are organized by age, not skill level. This camp is designed for students ages 12-17; for younger students, please see the introductory camp listings. Time Required: Approximately 30 minutes a day. Scheduled class time is a suggestion; assignments may be completed at any time.
